Cateromarket: PHP to Python migration and platform development

Project context

Cateromarket used a meal-delivery comparison platform written in PHP. The existing code was making maintenance and expansion increasingly difficult. Our task was to move the application to Python and restructure it for further development.

The engagement ran from 2022 to 2024. Four developers and a DevOps engineer worked on our side. The scope covered understanding the existing application, rebuilding and launching it, then developing further features.

The challenge

The working PHP application was the reference for the new version. We needed to identify its rules and dependencies and preserve them during the rewrite. Maintaining the processes the service relied on mattered to the client.

The rebuild also needed to make later changes easier. Refactoring meant reorganising the application so that new features would not recreate the maintenance problems of the previous version.

Scope of work and solution

We started by analysing the PHP application: its features, processes and dependencies. We identified the behaviour that the new version of the comparison platform needed to preserve.

We rewrote the service in Python and refactored the code. As we reorganised it, we checked the migrated features against the existing business logic. Our engagement also covered DevOps and infrastructure.

After launching the new version, we developed further features. The team that had modernised the platform and learned its business rules continued working on its expansion.

Results for the client

Cateromarket could develop further features on the rebuilt application with a team that knew its comparison rules. Modernisation preserved existing processes and reorganised the code to support further changes.
